ONCE UPON A SONG

SUMMARY

I attended a BFI Film Academy Short Course with the Film & Video Workshop and was a part of creating a short film with a selected group.

This was the first time that I had used Adobe Animate in a project, and while it was a bit challenging to get used to because of its differences to other software, I found it alright to use. This project taught me a lot about working at a high standard in a group and to a tight deadline.

PRE-PRODUCTION

I had the fun idea to make the music notes have funny little legs; this would allow them to be more animated and, since the m/c is trying to catch the notes to keep them forever, running away and making goofy chase sequences with it.

During this time, I allocated some of the scenes that I wanted to animate. You can probably tell which ones were made by me in the final film lol.

PRODUCTION

I animated for all my scenes in Adobe Animate, which is a software I'd known of before and played around with, but this is the first time I've properly used it in a project. It took some time to get used to because it was so vastly different to other art software I've used. Like, it's vector-based but also acts like Photoshop..? It still feels very weird to me now, but at the time, I got along with it fine.

LOOKING BACK

I feel like working with this project taught me a lot about what it's like to work in a near-real environment and to a high standard, let alone having the film I worked on be shown on a massive screen at the BFI Southbank. However, since it was on such a tight schedule, I feel like I shouldn't have been so worried about making each and every frame excessively perfect. I feel like I could have done a lot more if I weren't so much of a perfectionist.
